HDTV FAQ's

  1. Q. What is HDTV?

    A. HD stands for high definition, and means that picture that you view on your television is of higher quality than SD (standard definition). The difference is in the number of lines that comprise the image that you see on the screen. SD provides 480 lines, where as HDTV utilizes 720 or 1080 lines - so there is more detail and depth in the picture that you are viewing. Another difference that you might notice is that HDTV has the ability to produce a higher quality of sound. However, you must have special audio equipment to take advantage of the superior sound quality.

NOTE: HD is only available on channels that are specified as HD, and even then, not all programs on that channel will always be HD. The content can only be viewed in HD if it is broadcast in HD, you have the necessary HD equipment (TV, cables etc) and the content is decoded properly through a necessary receiver (in this case, the set top box that we provide decodes the content).

  2. Q. What equipment do I need in order to view HDTV and do you provide it?

    A. First, your television must be HD or HD compatible. Second, you will need a HD set top box, which we will provide for $10.95 per month per HD set top box. In addition, you also need special cables. We provide a component cable for you. You may need or want either RCA or Digital Audio cables depending upon your home theatre set up. Those are not provided by Telepak Networks.

  3. Q. How much does HDTV cost?

    A. Our HD service costs $10.95 per month for the HD set top box. The $10.95 fee is in addition to our standard cable monthly fees. You will need a HD set top box for each television that you wish to view HD on. Each box incurs the $10.95 per month fee. A 12-month contract and $100 installation fee are applied to the upgrade.

  4. Q. How many channels to you offer in HD?

    A. We currently offer the following channels in HD: WLBT, WJTV, WAPT, WMPN, WDBD, ESPN, UHD (Universal High Definition) and A&E.

  5. Q. Can I record in HD?

    A. HD programming requires a special HD-DVR. You cannot record HD programming with a standard VCR or DVD recorder. HD- DVR's will be coming soon.

  6. Q. If I subscribe to HDTV, will I get HD on every channel in every room that I have a cable box?

    A. Only if you have specifically requested an HD set top box for each room where you intend to have cable access. Additionally, each TV must be HD and must have the required component cables (see #2).

  7. Q. What do I need to look for when searching for an HD television?

    A. Resolution can differ, even among HDTV's. HD means that your picture image is 720 or 1080 lines - the higher the number of lines, the crisper your image will be.

  8. Q. Will HDTV affect the sound quality that I receive?

It may, or may not. If the content provider for the program you are watching sends the program to us with digital sound, then you will in turn receive it in the same format from us. Digital sound allows for six audio channels (left, right, center, left surround, right surround and a digital subwoofer, as well as stereo left and right channels), however you will need to appropriate audio components and cables in order to actually hear the difference in sound. TV manufacturers also use terms like 720p and 1080i. These letters, p (progressive scan) and i (interlaced scan) refer to how often the video signal is traced across the screen. Interlaced scan increases picture resolution but at the expense of some flicker or other artifacts.

  9. Q. Are all HDTV's widescreen?

Most HDTVs are wide screen because they provide a different aspect ratio than standard tvs. The ratio provided by HD is 16:9, where as SD is 4:3. The aspect ratio provided by HD is to allow for a true theatre experience, allowing you to view movies the way they were originally designed to be viewed. This can create some confusion when you alternate between HD and SD programming, which is not created to be viewed at the same aspect ratio as HD. Most, if not all, HDTVs allow you to choose the aspect ratio that you wish to view, so that your SD programming is not distorted. However, there may be a fair amount of wasted space on the screen after the picture is adjusted to fit in the proper ratio. This space will be black; however, it is often a better alternative to a distorted picture that would result from it being stretched to fill the space.

  10. Q. What are the benefits of HDTV?

    A. Most of the new technology in the television industry is geared toward HD. The picture and sound are far superior to analog or digital and provide for an overall better viewing experience. In addition, more and more programming is being developed to be viewed in HD.

  11. Q. How is HD different than Digital cable?

    A. Traditionally, programs have been broadcast over analog systems using low bandwidth signal. Digital cable utilizes an S video cable to provide digitally encoded programming with much higher color resolution than analog cable. HD is similar to Digital cable in that it is digitally encoded, however it provides a much higher aspect ratio (with up to 6 times the picture quality of Digital) so that your programming is much clearer and crisper to view. In addition, HD is formatted in wide screen and often is accompanied by a much better sound quality.

  12. Q. What resolution is your HDTV service?

    A. Snap HDTV is 720p, which is preferable for viewing sports or any other HD programming with any amount of movement.
